How to Password Protect a PDF in Adobe Acrobat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adobe Acrobat provides built-in security tools that allow you to encrypt a PDF with a password<\/strong>. Once enabled, anyone attempting to open the document must enter the password you created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exact location and wording of the security options can vary somewhat depending on which version of Adobe Acrobat you’re using. The screenshots below show the Acrobat interface used when this guide was originally created, but the basic process remains similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Open the PDF file you want to password protect in Adobe Acrobat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the document contains important information, consider creating a backup copy before changing its security settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: Open the Protect Tool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the version of Acrobat shown in our screenshots, select:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This opens Acrobat’s PDF protection tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In newer versions of Acrobat, the interface may look different. Look for Protect a PDF<\/strong>, Protect<\/strong>, or the security options available within Acrobat’s tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3: Choose Encrypt With Password<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Step 4: Require a Password to Open the PDF<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the Password Security settings, enable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is sometimes called a Document Open Password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this option enabled, the PDF is encrypted and a user must provide the correct password before the document can be opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 5: Create a Strong PDF Password<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Enter the password you want to use in the Document Open Password<\/strong> field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
